WHERE WE STAYED

Hotel Wailea, Relais & Châteaux—

We stayed at Hotel Wailea during our entire stay in Maui, and it was so nice to retreat to this private oasis each day after being out and about on various excursions around the island.

We assumed the hotel concierge was exaggerating when he said we’d need sunglasses to watch the sunset from the hotel lounge. He was not.

DAY ONE

Sunrise at Haleakala—

Just a few tips: Wear many layers (warm jacket, scarf, gloves, etc), pack a flashlight, and bring water and snacks. Temperature can drop to around 40 degrees even in the middle of summer. I was wearing about four layers but was still freezing. Take a moment to turn away from the sun rising to watch the moon setting. If you plan on visiting at sunrise, make sure you purchase a ticket for the day you’re going. Without a reservation, you will not be permitted entry, no exceptions. If you are planning on going at another time, you do not need a ticket.

We arrived at the top of the crater about two hours before sunrise to stake out a spot and enjoy stargaze sans light pollution. It was my first time shooting in extremely low light conditions, so I didn’t do the best job of capturing just how saturated the sky was with stars.

Once the sun began its ascent, the sky was changing colors every second.

Upcountry Farmer’s Market—

We made a pit stop at this farmer’s market on the way back to our resort. Vendors sell local produce, crafts, wellness shots, cold brew, açaí bowls, and more! There is a food stand called Maui Cones that sold some of the best fish we had in Maui! We had the signature ahi poke cone and mochiko chicken cone.

Sip Me, Makawao—

Cute little coffee shop with good coffee (locally grown and roasted from Maui Oma), pastries, and healthy smoothie/food options.

DAY TWO

Wailea Beach—

Very scenic beach close to our resort. We could tell it was family friendly and great for all kinds of activities, including snorkeling, paddle boarding, and kayaking.

We had a relaxing time lounging by the beach and listening to a podcast.

Maui Tropical Plantation—

A working sugarcane and tropical plantation set against the mountains. The grounds and plantation gardens are beautiful. The in-house restaurant and coffee shop are also worth checking out.
